Hi! Going in April to Placencia to see whale sharks hopefully. Should I book 2 snorkeling trips to better my chances, and if the full moon is the 11th ---which days would you all suggest I book? Is it better to have divers along on the boat also? This is my bucket list item, so I'm REALLY excited!! Thank you in advance for any help! :>)

Hi there, My wife and I went to Belize in May and did the whale shark dive on the very tail end of the foll moon (day 8 or 9 I believe). Sea was calm but all boats will have divers and snorklers on them I believe. We saw nothing on the first dive and got lucky to see one 25 foot beautiful whale shark on the second dive. I agree with the comment about Holbox and having a much greater chance but my biggest recommendation would be to go during the peak of the full moon window (read up on the operators' websites). I would recommend just a few days after the full moon to increase your chances. We dove with Seahorse Dive, which I honestly wouldn't recommend. I also wrote a review about them on Tripadvisor but would probably opt for a more serious (although more expensive) operator such as Splash for instance. The difference in service, professionalism and safety is significant but obviously price is also a key factor. Hope this helps and good luck, seeing a whale shark was definitely one of the most mesmerizing things I have seen under water so far. Stefan
